How to see who commented on a TikTok

The app shows you comments one scroll at a time. Here is where to look for the names, and how to get them as a list when scrolling stops being practical.

Seeing who commented on a TikTok is easy when there are twenty comments and tedious when there are two thousand. The app is built for reading a comment section, not for listing the people in it. Here is where the names are in the app, and what to do when you need them as a list.

In the app

Open the video and tap the comment icon. Each comment shows the commenter's display name and profile picture, and tapping the name opens their profile. On your own videos, the inbox also lists new comments as they arrive, which is the quickest way to see who has commented recently.

That covers checking a handful of people. It breaks down when you need to answer a question about all of them: who commented most, who commented before a deadline, or whether a particular account commented at all. There is no search box inside a comment section and no export button, so the only way to answer those in the app is to scroll and count.

Getting the commenters as a list

  1. Copy the video's link from the share menu.
  2. Paste it into the comment exporter and choose how many comments to pull, up to 10,000 per export.
  3. Download the result as Excel, CSV or JSON. Each row is one comment, with the commenter's handle (author_unique_id), their display name, the comment text, its likes, its reply count and when it was posted.

Questions the list answers

  • Did a specific account comment? Search the handle column. Use the handle rather than the display name, because display names change and are not unique.
  • Who commented most? A pivot table on the handle column, counting rows, ranks commenters by how many times they commented.
  • Who commented before a date? Filter the created_at column. TikTok leaves the date out on the occasional comment, so decide in advance how to treat a blank.
  • Whose comments got the most likes? Sort by likes. On a busy video, the top twenty are usually the comments that shaped how everyone else read it.

What the list will not include

Replies are left out unless you tick "Include reply threads", and then they are pulled for up to 200 of the most-replied comments. Comments that TikTok has hidden or removed will not appear. And comments are public, but the people writing them did not sign up to be in your spreadsheet: use the list for the job in front of you, and do not republish anyone's handle without a reason they would recognise.

If the list is for picking a giveaway winner, there is a fair way to do that in how to pick a TikTok giveaway winner fairly. If it is for understanding what people think, start with how to research TikTok comments for a campaign.
